Your Alarm.com Account Runs Through Your Alarm Company: What to Do When They Stop Answering

You open the Alarm.com app and it works. But the company that installed your alarm won't pick up the phone, or their website is gone, or the number is disconnected.

Quick Answer

Alarm.com sells its platform to independent service providers, not to the public. Your service provider handles your billing and service plan changes. Find their contact details in the app under Menu, then Support. If that number doesn't work, email info@alarm.com with the name, email, phone number and zip code on the account, and Alarm.com says it will help. Alarm.com's help pages don't describe how an account moves from one provider to another, so we won't make up a process. Call us and we will help.

So who does the account belong to, and who do you call? Alarm.com's own help pages answer part of that. They also leave one important thing out. Here's what they say, and where they stop.

Why the account sits with your provider

Alarm.com explains it this way: it's a software company that sells a platform to independent service providers. Those providers resell it to businesses and homeowners, and they aren't affiliated with Alarm.com. Alarm.com doesn't sell directly to the public.

In practice, that means:

  • Your provider designs and installs the system.
  • Your provider handles your billing and service plan changes.
  • Your provider manages the central monitoring station that receives alarm signals, according to Alarm.com.
  • For service on a part that isn't working, Alarm.com says to contact your provider.

The Alarm.com app is yours to use every day. But the relationship behind it runs through your provider. When the provider goes quiet, you feel it in billing, service and support.

One caution. Alarm.com's help pages are written mostly for homes, and commercial accounts can differ. Treat this as a map, not a guarantee for your account.

Step 1: Find your provider's contact details

In the Alarm.com app:

  1. Open the app and tap Menu.
  2. Tap Support.
  3. Choose how to reach your provider: Phone Number, Email, Support Website or Support Ticket. Alarm.com notes that depending on your provider, not all four options appear.

On the Alarm.com customer website, the same Support menu is there.

Also look, without touching any equipment, at yard signs, window stickers and billing statements. Alarm.com says provider contact details can often be found there.

Step 2: Check who you pay for monitoring

Look at your billing statements and contracts. Write down the company name, the phone number and the account name on the bill. This tells you who sits behind your monitoring, and it's useful for anyone helping you later.

If you think your provider has closed, don't assume the worst, and don't cancel anything yet. Find out who you're paying first.

Step 3: If the number doesn't work, contact Alarm.com

Alarm.com's help page says that if you have difficulty reaching your provider, send this information to info@alarm.com:

  • Name on the account
  • Email or emails on the account
  • Phone number or numbers on the account
  • Zip code for the account
  • A note about any difficulties you've had

Alarm.com's help page also says that it doesn't directly sell to, support or bill end customers, but it's happy to contact your provider. For a business, Alarm.com's help page also lists a phone line, 1-800-495-7621, for finding out who your provider is. If you feel you aren't getting the service you need from your Alarm.com system, Alarm.com invites you to write to wecare@alarm.com.

Set expectations here. Alarm.com can pass on a message to a provider. Its pages don't say it can move your account to a new one.

Step 4: Know the one tool you control

If your provider uses 24/7 Managed Access, you stay in control. Alarm.com's page says you can choose which categories your provider manages, such as arming and disarming, viewing live video and images, user code management and login management. You can update or revoke your provider's access at any time.

To check or change it:

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click 24/7 Managed Access Settings.
  4. Opt out of Managed Access, or choose which features to exclude, and click Save.

When a provider wants managed access, Alarm.com says you get an email with a link to log in and approve it. Nothing happens without your approval. This is the page to check for any access you approved through Managed Access. Alarm.com's pages don't say it lists every way a provider can reach your account.

What Alarm.com's pages don't say

We searched Alarm.com's help pages for a step by step process to move an existing account from one provider to another. We didn't find one. Other companies online describe their own transfer methods, but those aren't Alarm.com's, so we aren't repeating them.

What this means for you: don't take any action that depends on a transfer process until someone confirms how it works for your account. That includes cancelling service.

What not to do

  • Don't cancel monitoring or service until you know who will handle it next.
  • Don't unplug, move or open the alarm panel.
  • Don't give your login to anyone who contacts you out of the blue. Alarm.com says people claiming to sell you an Alarm.com system aren't Alarm.com employees.
  • Don't delete the app or your login. You'll want them while this gets sorted out.
