How to Add or Delete User Codes in Alarm.com (App and Web)

Someone new needs to arm and disarm the alarm. Someone who left still knows the code. Both are quick changes in Alarm.com if you know where to look.

Quick Answer

Log in to the Alarm.com app or website, open Users, and add or select the person. To add, give them a name, create an access code (or let Alarm.com generate one), choose which devices the code works on, and save. To delete, tap or click More (the three dots) next to the user, choose Delete, and confirm. The system has to be disarmed to change or delete a code, and a new code can take a few minutes to start working at the panel.

What you need

  • Your Alarm.com login. If you don't see the Users options, your login may not have the required permission.
  • The person's first and last name. Their mobile number or email is optional.
  • A decision on which devices the code should work on, such as the panel or a connected lock.
  • The system in a disarmed state before you edit or delete.

Some account types and service packages can't manage codes from the app or website. If you don't see Users, or a code won't save, call PAX.

Add a user code in the app

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon in the top left.
  3. Scroll down and tap Users.
  4. Tap the plus sign.
  5. Enter the first and last name, then tap Create.
  6. In Access Code, type a code or tap Generate Code.
  7. Use the toggle switches to choose which devices (panel, locks) the code works on.
  8. Tap Save. Allow a few minutes for the code to become active at the panel.
  9. Optional: tap Add Contact to add a mobile number, email, or both.

Add a user code on the web

  1. Log in to the web dashboard.
  2. Click Users, then Add New User.
  3. Enter the first and last name and click Create.
  4. In Access Code, create a code or click Generate Code.
  5. Turn on the devices you want the code to work on.
  6. Click Save. Allow a few minutes for the code to become active.
  7. Optional: click Add Contact.

Change an existing code

You don't have to delete a user to change their code. The system has to be disarmed first. Alarm.com sends a notice to the account's primary email when a code is changed.

In the app:

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com app and tap the Menu icon.
  2. Tap Users, then tap the person.
  3. Tap the access code field and enter the new code.
  4. Tap Save.

On the website:

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website and click Users.
  2. Click More (the three dots) next to the person, then click Edit.
  3. Click the access code field and enter a code, or click Generate Code.
  4. Choose which devices and features the code covers.
  5. Click Save.

Limit a code to certain days and times

Some systems let you restrict a code to a weekly schedule. If you don't see these options, your system may not be compatible with scheduled codes. Call PAX.

In the app: tap the Menu icon, tap Users, and tap the person. Check that Panel Access is on and the person has a valid access code. Under Access Information, tap Access Period, tap Restricted schedule, set the days and times in Weekly Schedule, and tap Save.

On the website: click Users, click More next to the person, then click Edit. Check that panel access is on and the code is valid. Under Access Information, click Access Period, click Restricted Schedule, set the Weekly Schedule, and click Save.

Screen names can differ between app versions.

Get an alert when someone arms or disarms

Alarm.com's arming event notification tells you when and who arms or disarms the system. It covers arming and disarming with that person's code. It doesn't tell you about every use of a lock.

In the app: tap the Menu icon, tap Notifications, tap the Configure icon, tap the Add icon, tap Create Your Own, then choose Arming Event. On the website: click Notifications, click New Notification, click Business, then click Employee arming activity. To watch specific people, choose Select Users and Keyfobs in the When menu. Then pick what to be told about (disarm, arm stay, arm away), choose the days and times, add recipients, and save.

PAX can help you set up your own Alarm.com alerts.

Delete a user in the app

  1. Make sure the system is disarmed.
  2. Log in to the Alarm.com app and tap the Menu icon.
  3. Tap Users.
  4. Tap More (the three dots) next to the person to delete.
  5. Tap Delete.
  6. Tap Delete again to confirm. Alarm.com says this removes all of the person's information, such as their email address and phone number, from the entire system.

Delete a user on the website

  1. Make sure the system is disarmed.
  2. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website and click Users.
  3. Click More (the three dots) next to the person to delete.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Click Delete User to confirm.

Remove access but keep the person in the list

Alarm.com also lets you remove a person's alarm access and keep their other information, such as their email address and phone number. Make sure the system is disarmed first. In the app: tap the Menu icon, tap Users, tap More next to the person, tap Edit, and tap Panels. On the Device Access page, turn off the access points the code should no longer have, then tap Save. On the website: click Users, click More next to the person, click Edit, and click Panels. Turn off the access points, then click Save.

Delete several users at once (Commercial accounts)

Bulk deletion is only for Commercial accounts.

  1. Make sure the system is disarmed.
  2. On the customer website, click Users, then More, then Bulk Actions.
  3. Select the users to delete and click the trash icon.
  4. In Confirm Bulk User Deletion, click Delete.

What the vendor guide skips

Alarm.com's pages are written for a person with a house and a handful of family members. A business has more people and more turnover.

  • One person, one code. Shared codes tell you nothing about who armed or disarmed. If three staff use "the office code," you can't tell them apart, and you can't take one away without changing it for everyone. Give each person their own.
  • Offboarding takes more than one deletion. When someone leaves, delete their alarm code and then check door access, the camera app, and the intercom. Our guide on who has access to your building has a simple checklist.
  • Check the call list too. A monitoring center may call a list of people when the alarm goes off. Some accounts let you edit that list on the website under Settings, then Monitoring Station, then Emergency Contacts. Alarm.com says this only works if your monitoring station supports it and your service provider has turned it on, and your login needs the right permission. If you don't see it, call PAX. Don't rely on an old list.
  • Codes on locks. If the code also opens a connected lock, check the lock too. After you delete a user, wait a few minutes and test the old code at the door. If it still opens the lock, call PAX.
  • Keep codes out of emails and texts. Tell people their code in person or by phone, and don't keep a list in a shared document.
  • Review every month. Compare the Users list to your staff list.
  • Don't rely on one master code. If nobody knows the master code, call PAX. Don't guess at it.

If you'd rather not do it yourself

If a code doesn't reach the panel, a lock doesn't match the alarm, you need many changes at once, or you want schedules or special codes set up, call PAX at (855) 440-5353 or email info@paxsecurity.com. You can also reach us through https://paxsecurity.com/contact-us.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Trying to change a code while the system is armed.

Expecting a new code to work instantly. Give it a few minutes before you try it at the keypad.

Deleting a user and forgetting that their contact information goes with them.

Using the same code for everyone.

Not telling the new person which devices their code works on.

Leaving former staff in the user list for months.

Frequently Asked Questions

My new code doesn't work at the panel.

Wait a few minutes. Alarm.com says to allow some time for a new code to become active at the panel. If it still fails, call PAX.

Can I edit an existing code instead of deleting it?

Yes. Disarm the system first, then follow the steps under Change an existing code above.

I forgot the master code.

If nobody knows the master code, call PAX. Don't guess at it.

Will the person know their code was deleted?

Alarm.com says a code change sends a notice to the primary email on the account. Its pages don't say the person is told when their code is deleted, so tell them yourself if that matters.

Does this work for every Alarm.com panel?

Not always. Some account types, service packages and panels can't manage codes from the app or website. If you don't see Users, or a code won't save, call PAX.
